Bank of Maldives (BML) on Saturday, 10th July, announced on financially supporting to build a beach shed to enhance the Hulhumale’ beach library – “Foiy Gaadiya”.
According to BML, they aim to provide a more permanent solution for the beach library from damages sustained during bad-weather days. The beach shed will attempt to shelter the contents of the beach library from such climatic interferences while “making the space more accessible for the community.”
The project will see the Hulhumale’ beach library receiving a ‘makeover’ in the form of a traditional Maldivian hut – “Haruge” – that will shelter the books from rain or wind.
Moreover, the beach shed will become the venue for creative activities such as book reading for kids and adults and the venue will be used as a book club as well as an art and craft station. BML further notes the venue will be utilized to host a variety of other educational projects.
The Hulhumale’ “Foiy Gaadiya” came to inception following the winning proposal to BML’s Community Fund by a local NGO – Children of Maldives. On the purpose of the project, its founders commented “the main focus of Foiy Gaadiya is to grow reading habits in the community through improved access to a variety of books for all ages while creating a space for the community to use.”
Furthermore, the project was assisted by Housing Development Corporation (HDC) that had supplied additional materials as well as building the beach shed attached to the project.
