Habib Bank will reportedly close a total of 21 dormant bank accounts registered to its Male’ Branch over dormancy.
According to the bank’s announcement in which it had publicized details of all 21 accounts, Habib Bank clarified that the accounts have been dormant without any financial transactions for five years as of December 2021.
Meanwhile, the bank also confirmed that documents have not been provided to the respective owners regarding the planned closure while the bank had regularly sent bank statements to the last known addresses of the respective owners.
However, in accordance with the Maldives Banking Act, Habib Bank forwarded two separate notices through registered postal addresses first on 02nd January, requesting the presence of the owners at the bank within 45 days from the date of the notice.
The bank confirmed that the owners of the dormant accounts had failed to present themselves as per its request, nor had the owners informed of any extenuating circumstances.
The second notice was sent on Wednesday, 16th February and the owners have been advised to present themselves at Habib Bank within 60 days from the date of the notice.
Moreover, the owners are advised to present themselves with an unexpired National Identity card or Passport in order to validate their identities.
Failure to comply to the notice will result in the immediate closure of the bank accounts according to Habib Bank while the monies deposited in the accounts will be transferred to Maldives Monetary Authority upon such a situation.
