The Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mr. Mohamed Aslam has affirmed that the planned land reclamation project at Addu City will proceed according to schedule.
Moreover, the minister confirmed regarding this while responding to a queries posed by Maradhoo constituency lawmaker Mr. Ibrahim Shareef during Tuesday’s parliament sitting.
The minister affirmed that the reclamation project is expected to kick off in June 2022, while project mobilization is currently underway.
The state has contracted Netherland’s offshore construction company Van Oord for the project, for which signing took place earlier on 27th March 2022.
Meanwhile, reportedly an expenditure of MVR1.3 billion is expected to be injected for the preservation of the environment around the planned reclamation area. Furthermore, the project involves reclamation of 194.3 hectares of land within 18 months.
The project entails reclamation of 90 hectares from Hithadhoo, 76 hectares from Maradhoo, three islands spanning 25 hectares within Addu City lagoon specific for tourism; each island spans 8.3 hectares in length.
Additionally 3.3 hectares of land for the embankment of the 4-lane link road. Other components include 4,700 meters of rock boulder revetment in Hithadhoo, 3,800 meters of rock boulder revetment in Maradhoo-Feydhoo and 1,575 meters of revetment in the link road structure as well as a geo-bag revetment at three islands that will be reclaimed from the lagoon spanning 4,140 meters.
