The government of Japan has provided a grant aid of JPY117,000,000 (MVR13,389,210) towards implementation of the human resource development scholarship project.

The exchange of note for the project was signed by the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Mrs. Takeuchi Midori on behalf of the Japanese government and Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs during a ceremony held at the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Maldives government confirms that this assistance is in line with the exchange of notes signed between the two governments earlier in August 2020, which offered fully funded scholarships for Maldivian locals for Master’s Degree programs in social sciences at top universities in Japan.

The program spans for a duration of four years, which commenced on 2020 and involves selection of six eligible locals each year for the scholarship.

Moreover, the scholarship program is directed towards highly capable young civil servants with the prospect of engaging in policy formulation and implementation of social and economic development policies.

The Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) has been implemented in 21 partner countries since 1999, while the JDS project in the Maldives will be implemented through the association between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Higher Education.
