    Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun actual ground works of the Madaveli-Hoandehdhoo causeway project, in Gaaf Dhaal atoll.

    The project was officiated at a special ceremony held in Hoandehdhoo on Tuesday, 13th September. The ceremony was graced by Mr. Hussain Firushan, Madaveli MP, along with Madaveli council’s president Fiyaz Hassan, his Hoandehdhoo council counterpart Hussain Warish and MTCC CEO Adam Azim.

    According to MTCC, the causeway will be developed to sustain heavy-load vehicles while allowing ocean currents to flow underneath the structure. The contractor further the structure will connect four islands within the atoll which include;

    • Madaveli
    • Hoandehdhoo
    • Kannigila and Haadhoo (two uninhabited islands that geographically fall within the area)

    MTCC made emphasis on the importance of the causeway for the locals, that will boost logistical convenience. The contractor assures the structure will be completed with the contractually agreed period, while subsequently resolving erosion issues faced by the residential islands.

    The project was contracted to MTCC on 26th October 2021. The project total is valued at MVR84.17 million.
