The Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said the National Disability Registry (NDR) was instrumental in the administration’s efforts to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
The President made the statement last Thursday, 05th January 2023, while addressing a function in R. Alifushi to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Additionally, Maldives First Lady Fazna Ahmed officially launched the NDR digital portal at the function, held in Alifushi School. The function was attended by senior government officials, community leaders, and residents of the island.
While addressing the attendees, President Solih underlined the efforts made under his administration to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities and mobilize support for their dignity, rights, and well-being. Moreover, President Solih also emphasized on NDR’s role, adding that the data collected through the registry will ease the administration’s efforts in meeting the specific needs and requirements of disabled individuals.
He also claimed NDR will aid in providing the disability allowance. President Solih also announced that his administration is currently reviewing the allowance, promising to reveal the details soon.
At the function, President Solih presented the Rivehi Thari Awards to the winners of the Rivehi Exhibition; which was focused primarily to promote the arts and crafts skills of persons with disabilities. A total of eight awards across four categories were presented at the function.
The theme for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 2022 was “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world”.
