Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged China to reclaim its position as the top source market of tourist arrivals to the Maldives once again.
The Maldivian head of state’s remarks have come shortly after the latest in the India-Maldives row which sparked due to derogatory remarks made by senior government officials of the Maldivian government against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi; directed at his recent visit to Lakshadweep to promote the island nation’s tourism prospects.
Speaking at the Invest Maldives Forum, President Muizzu highlighted China had maintained top spot in the Maldivian tourism industry, in terms of arrivals, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He advocated for China to reclaim its position as the top source market once more, and highlighted his administration has made the decision to further diversify the tourism industry in the Maldives.
Part of the fresh impetus in tourism industry development also includes the establishment of a school offering world-class training in hospitality along with the development of sports, medical, and cultural tourism niches in the Maldives.
