    Watermelon, coconut prices jump up over scarcity

    Watermelon and coconut prices shoot up owing to scarcity in local market

    Local vendors report the prices of watermelon and coconut have shot up in the local market.

    According to vendors and sellers focusing on perishables, watermelon is now sold at MVR 30 per kilogram, coconuts are sold at MVR 70 per piece. Smaller coconuts are sold at MVR 35 per piece.

    Additionally, prepared coconut drinks are now sold at MVR 180 per bottle.

    The prices of these items have increased owing to their scarcity in the local market, since watermelon was previously sold at MVR 18 per kilogram.

    Moreover, vendors further inform the lack of availability of fresh watermelon from Alifu Alifu Thoddoo; known for its surplus watermelon harvests per year.

    On the other hand, chili prices have dropped and is now sold at MVR 150 per kilo. Chili is priced between MVR 15 and 20 per 100 grams. Collard greens, another hot item during Ramadan, is sold at MVR 10 for three leaves while Kankun is sold at MVR 5 per bundle.

    Carrots are now sold at MVR 35 per kilogram and cucumbers for MVR 30 per kilogram. Sour mangoes are priced at MVR 100 per kilogram, Thailand-imported mangoes on the other hand, sold for MVR 160 per kilogram.

    Apples and oranges, previously sold for MVR 6 and MVR 7 respectively, are now sold at MVR 10 per piece.
