Bank of Maldives (BML) has enabled One Time Passwords (OTPs) for all QR payments.
The bank has introduced the additional layer to further enhance security for payments through its application.
Once updated, the BML Mobile Banking application will allow customers to make Scan to Pay transactions of any amount using an OTP that can be generated using an Authenticator, SMS, or email.
Meanwhile, several steps were made by the bank to protect customers from scams. Earlier in December 2022, the bank enabled authenticator applications to generate OTPs for all transactions processed via Internet and Mobile Banking to protect customers even if their email accounts have been compromised.
BML also advised customers to refrain from opening suspicious texts, pop-up windows or click links or attachments in SMS and email. Additionally the bank affirmed it will never send SMS with website links.
The bank further said that calls and SMS can be easily ‘spoofed’ to make it seem like it is coming from ‘BML’ or any other trusted party.
Furthermore, BML advised customers never to share the OTP since it is a security measure, and encouraged the customers to frequently change their banking and email passwords. BML also suggested to set passwords that are difficult for others to guess, and advised against saving email or banking passwords on the web browser since it can be easily extracted in light of the user’s email getting compromised.
