The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and Norway’s Flocean have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to commence a feasibility study for the viability of a subsea reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system in the Maldives.<\/p>\n
MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed and Flocean’s MD Alexander Fuglesang signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the feasibility study, MWSC stated the survey aims to collect technical data to assess the possibility of establishing a subsea desalination system in the Maldives, its projected environmental impact, and the financial projections of the project.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, MWSC’s role will be provide present data and documents to assist Flocean’s survey, assist the Norwegian company in acquiring relevant permits from state bodies, and overall assistance in the project.<\/p>\n
The project is poised to enhance the manufacture of clean drinkable water on par with the demand. The feasibility study will provie valuable new data, which MWSC said will assist with innovative new solutions.<\/p>\n
A subsea desalination project also solves issues related to land for conventional desalination plants and will reportedly consume less energy in the manufacturing process, MWSC added.<\/p>\n
The project will also help Maldives move closer to achieving UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and other climate combat objectives.
