As Spotify released its latest financial figures, a company spokesperson emphasized that the responsibility for distributing royalties lies with record labels and publishers.<\/p>\n

“Spotify does not pay artists or songwriters directly,” the spokesperson stated. “We pay rights holders\u2014typically record labels, music publishers, and collection societies\u2014who then compensate artists and songwriters based on their individual contracts.”<\/p>\n

Due to these contractual agreements, Spotify claims it lacks “visibility” into how royalties are ultimately distributed.<\/p>\n

The amount an artist earns from streaming varies widely. A 2021 UK parliamentary committee found that performers receive, on average, just 16% of a stream’s total value.<\/p>\n

For example, an artist whose music generates \u00a3100,000 in revenue on Spotify might take home only \u00a316,000 in royalties before tax.<\/p>\n
