Niantic Labs, the company behind Pok\u00e9mon Go, has announced the sale of its gaming division to Saudi-owned Scopely<\/a> for $3.5 billion as it shifts its focus toward geospatial technology.<\/p>\n

The deal, unveiled on Wednesday, is part of Saudi Arabia\u2019s broader strategy to establish itself as a global gaming hub. The kingdom\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, through its subsidiary Savvy Games, previously acquired Scopely<\/a> for $4.9 billion in 2023 as part of efforts to diversify its economy beyond fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

Niantic\u2019s New Direction: Geospatial AI<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Alongside the sale, Niantic will distribute an additional $350 million to its equity holders, bringing the total deal value to $3.85 billion. The company will also spin off its geospatial artificial intelligence (AI) division into a new firm called Niantic Spatial<\/strong>, which will be led by Niantic\u2019s founder and CEO, John Hanke.<\/p>\n

Niantic Spatial will be backed by $250 million in funding\u2014$200 million from Niantic\u2019s balance sheet and an additional $50 million from Scopely. All of Niantic\u2019s original investors will retain their stakes in the newly formed company.<\/p>\n

Scopely Acquires Popular AR Gaming Titles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Under the acquisition, Scopely will take control of Niantic\u2019s gaming portfolio, which includes:<\/p>\n

  • Pok\u00e9mon GO<\/strong> \u2013 The 2016 hit with over 20 million weekly active players.<\/li>\n
  • Pikmin Bloom<\/strong> \u2013 A walking-based AR game released in 2021.<\/li>\n
  • Monster Hunter Now<\/strong> \u2013 A 2023 AR game inspired by the popular Monster Hunter franchise.<\/li>\n
  • Campfire<\/strong> \u2013 A community interaction platform.<\/li>\n
  • Wayfarer<\/strong> \u2013 A tool allowing players to contribute new locations to Niantic\u2019s AR map.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    All Niantic employees working on these games will transition to Scopely, which currently employs 2,300 people.<\/p>\n

    Challenges and Declining Engagement<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Despite Pok\u00e9mon Go\u2019s continued popularity\u2014it still attracts 30 million monthly players\u2014Niantic has struggled to replicate its massive success with other titles. Player complaints about rising in-game costs and paywalled content have also increased in recent months.<\/p>\n

    Since the pandemic, Niantic has canceled several high-profile projects, including NBA, Harry Potter, and Marvel-themed games, while laying off hundreds of employees.<\/p>\n

    Saudi Arabia\u2019s Growing Gaming Empire<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) continues to expand its influence in the gaming sector, investing billions into the industry. The acquisition of Niantic\u2019s gaming division is another step toward its vision of becoming a leading force in global gaming.<\/p>\n

    Despite launching nearly a decade ago, Pok\u00e9mon Go remains one of the highest-grossing mobile games worldwide<\/strong>, proving the continued demand for AR-based gaming experiences.
