Prominent figures from the nation\u2019s sporting community, both past and present, were also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"984\">The newly ratified amendment introduces a series of reforms intended to transform the governance and development of sports across the country. Among the major provisions are:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"2443\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1158\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1158\"><strong data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1030\">Decentralisation of sports development<\/strong>: Local atoll and island authorities will now play a more active role in promoting and managing sports within their communities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1374\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1374\"><strong data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1206\">Formation of regional sports associations<\/strong>: New associations for each sport will be established in regions nationwide, accompanied by regional tournaments to nurture talent and expand competitive opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1534\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1534\"><strong data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1416\">Creation of a dedicated Sports Fund<\/strong>: A specialised fund has been set up to ensure financial support for the sector\u2019s growth and long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1726\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1726\"><strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1589\">Recognition of the Maldives Paralympic Committee<\/strong>: The Committee is now acknowledged as an independent legal entity, with the same status and authority as the Maldives Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1928\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1928\"><strong data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1799\">Establishment of divisions under the Maldives Paralympic Committee<\/strong>: Sports associations will now include dedicated divisions to promote inclusivity and participation for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"2105\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"2105\"><strong data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"1987\">Creation of the Maldives National Anti-Doping Agency<\/strong>: A new independent body has been formed to oversee anti-doping efforts and maintain integrity and fairness in sports.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2259\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2259\"><strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2155\">Introduction of a sports arbitration system<\/strong>: A legal mechanism will be established to protect athletes\u2019 rights and resolve sports-related disputes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2443\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2443\"><strong data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2305\">Systematic development of school sports<\/strong>: New &#8216;Inter-Scholastic&#8217; associations and clubs will be introduced to organise and support school-level sporting activities under the law.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2445\" data-end=\"2643\">In addition to these major changes, the amendment also includes several other measures to reinforce the institutional framework and ensure the sustainable development of the Maldivian sports sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2645\" data-end=\"2856\">Addressing the media during the ceremony, President Dr Muizzu elaborated on the aims of the Amendment and highlighted the positive impact it is expected to have on communities and athletes throughout the nation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2858\" data-end=\"3095\">The Amendment was passed by the People\u2019s Majlis during the 26th sitting of its first session of the 2025 parliamentary term, held on Monday, May 5, 2025.
