In a significant step toward safeguarding public health, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act (Act No. 15\/2010), introducing a groundbreaking generational ban on tobacco. The amendment aims to shield current and future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco and reinforces the Maldives’ commitment to a healthier society.<\/p>\n

Key Provisions of the Amendment<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most notable changes is a generational ban that prohibits the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products by individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. In addition, the law bars anyone under the age of 21 from engaging in the sale or commercial handling of tobacco, further reducing youth exposure to tobacco-related activities.<\/p>\n

The amendment also introduces a strict ban on the import, possession, and use of tobacco production machinery, electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and associated accessories. This measure closes potential loopholes and addresses the growing concern over alternative nicotine delivery systems.<\/p>\n

To ensure comprehensive control, the law prohibits all forms of tobacco advertising, sponsorship, and promotional activities. A system has also been established for the accountable disposal of confiscated tobacco, e-cigarettes, vapes, and related equipment, ensuring transparency and public reassurance.<\/p>\n

A Public Health Milestone<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking at the ratification ceremony held at the President\u2019s Office, President Muizzu emphasized the health benefits of the amendment. Senior government officials and students born after January 1, 2007, were present at the event, symbolizing the law\u2019s focus on protecting younger generations.<\/p>\n

The President also addressed journalists, outlining the law\u2019s provisions and expected outcomes in reducing tobacco-related illnesses and promoting a healthier, more resilient society.<\/p>\n

The Amendment was passed during the 30th sitting of Parliament on May 13, 2025. It has since been published in the Government Gazette and will come into effect on November 1, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
