President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration\u2019s commitment to addressing critical national challenges, including tobacco control, through decisive and long-overdue reforms. Speaking at the ratification ceremony of the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act (Act No. 15\/2010), the President emphasized that his government possesses the political will to act where previous administrations fell short.<\/p>\n
The newly ratified amendment introduces a landmark generational ban on tobacco in the Maldives. As per the legislation, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, are permanently prohibited from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products. In a further effort to shield youth from tobacco exposure, the law also bans anyone under 21 from engaging in tobacco-related sales or commercial activities.<\/p>\n
President Muizzu described the amendment as a pivotal move in steering the nation away from harmful influences. He urged Maldivians to support and participate in implementing the reforms, noting that such collective action is essential to protect public health and secure a healthier future for the country.<\/p>\n
“This administration has the resolve to tackle long-ignored issues. Our goal is not to generate revenue through enforcement, but to create a healthier society free from tobacco and its dangers,” said the President.<\/p>\n
In addition to the generational ban, the revised law includes a comprehensive ban on all forms of tobacco advertising, sponsorship, and promotional activities. The government will also roll out nationwide tobacco cessation services and public awareness campaigns to support the transition.<\/p>\n
The President made it clear that the amendment is not an isolated health measure, but part of a broader strategy to improve national wellbeing and deter drug use and other harmful behaviors. He called for unity and collaboration in enforcing the law, underscoring that the amendment plays a key role in the Maldives\u2019 long-term development agenda.<\/p>\n
