The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will begin producing water in Kulhudhuffushi City using exclusively solar energy this coming April, completely eliminating the use of diesel in the process.<\/p>\n
MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen made the announcement on World Water Day via a social media statement, highlighting the project as a major step forward in the government’s water security agenda.<\/p>\n
Matheen noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has made it a core policy priority to build water systems that harness the Maldives’ natural resources. This approach aims to ensure uninterrupted water services for citizens, even in the face of climate change, natural disasters, and global supply disruptions.<\/p>\n
On the progress of the project itself, Matheen confirmed that MWSC has completed all physical construction work on the solar-powered water production facility in Kulhudhuffushi. The facility is currently undergoing final testing. Once testing concludes, the system will generate sufficient water to meet the entire island’s needs using solar power alone.<\/p>\n
