The government is pushing ahead with plans to establish a major Gaadhoo port and bunkering facility in Laamu Atoll.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed confirmed the update on Monday. He delivered the remarks at a press conference held at the President’s Office on April 14.<\/p>\n

“Discussions are underway with interested parties to establish a port and bunkering service in the Gaadhoo area. The government’s aim is to provide all the necessary facilities to carry out the project,” he said.<\/p>\n
In addition, the Minister stressed that regional port development is now moving at a rapid pace. This approach marks a significant shift away from historically centralized development.<\/p>\n
Saeed pointed to the Kulhudhuffushi Port Development Project as clear evidence of this accelerated drive. Crews are currently dredging the site to allow larger vessels to dock. Meanwhile, land reclamation work is expanding the port’s operational footprint.<\/p>\n
The site already operates as a duty-free zone. It also offers ample storage for construction materials. Moreover, officials are reviewing fresh proposals to enhance the facility further.<\/p>\n
The Minister also detailed concurrent development work underway in Addu City. Crews are expanding the capacity of the HIthadhoo commercial port and adding new services. Furthermore, logistical arrangements will soon enable shipping containers to travel directly to the southernmost atoll.<\/p>\n
This direct delivery model will sharply improve efficiency. It will also reduce costs for businesses and consumers across the south.<\/p>\n
