MindCo and the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare jointly hosted a consultative session last Thursday to mark Girls in ICT Day 2026. The session aimed to introduce women to digital economy opportunities. It also sought to boost the participation of women and girls in the ICT sector.<\/p>\n
Girls in ICT Day is an international observance. It encourages girls to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology.<\/p>\n
The open consultation took place at the Umar Zahir Building in Hulhumal\u00e9. Organizers held the session under the them “Girls Go Digital – Co-Creating P6, P7, P8.” The event drew women entrepreneurs, students, industry professionals, civil society groups, and digital sector stakeholders.<\/p>\n
The session created a platform for reflection and dialogue. Furthermore, participants explored the role women can play in achieving Maldives 2.0, particularly Pillar 8 on the Digital Economy. They shared experiences from the field. Additionally, they discussed the barriers women face when entering and advancing in ICT.<\/p>\n
MindCo delivered the opening presentation. The presentation outlined the current state of women’s representation in digital and AI technologies, both globally and nationally. Moreover, it examined the challenges women face when joining the sector. It also highlighted potential initiatives to expand their engagement.<\/p>\n
Two panel discussions followed the presentation. The first panel focused on “Opportunities, Challenges, and Collaborative Pathways for Women in the Digital Economy.” Panelists explored the current digital landscape. They also discussed strategies to overcome barriers and avenues for cross-sector collaboration.<\/p>\n
The second panel addressed this year’s theme: “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future.” Leaders from women-led tech organizations joined the discussion. Pioneers in digital innovation and experts in data and artificial intelligence also shared their views.<\/p>\n
Panelists highlighted the opportunities emerging through AI for women and girls. In addition, they discussed the skills, support systems, and environments needed to grow women’s participation in the sector.<\/p>\n
The closing segment invited participants to share their views. Attendees raised both technical and non-technical barriers facing women in the digital field. The discussions also identified practical ways for MindCo, civil society, and institutions to support women in tech. Expanding access to digital skills and resources emerged as a clear priority.<\/p>\n
MindCo confirmed its commitment to advancing Maldives 2.0 alongside key stakeholders. The company will pursue further initiatives to grow women’s participation in the digital economy.<\/p>\n
