The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has named Qatar a crucial partner in building the Maldivian tourism industry.<\/p>\n
The ministry credited the late former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, with helping the Maldives across many sectors.<\/p>\n
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Abdulla Hameed spoke during the PSM News’ special coverage. The broadcast followed the passing of the former Emir. Hameed said Qatar has long kept a close relationships with the Maldives. Strong Islamic bonds anchor that friendship, he said. Qatar has also backed the Maldives in many practical ways over the years.<\/p>\n
Hameed called Qatar Airways one of the biggest players in the Maldives tourism sector. He then recounted how the airline first flew to the country. At that time, the carrier held two large wide-body aircraft. Then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom made a direct request. The former Emir gave his guidance. As a result, Qatar Airways launched its Maldives flights.<\/p>\n
“When Qatar Airways began flights to the Maldives, it wasn’t a leading airline yet. While trying to start operations, it wasn’t even clear when the flights could officially begin. During a visit by President Maumoon to Qatar, he shared these details with the Emir, who then stated that he did not wish to turn his back on a fellow Muslim nation, and instructed to start the flights even if it meant operating at a loss. That is how the flights between the countries began,” Hameed said.<\/p>\n
Qatar’s commitment held firm during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many major airlines suspended their Maldives routes. Qatar Airways kept flying. The carrier carried essential medicines and other vital supplies into the country during that crisis.<\/p>\n
