Fishing knowledge was shared aboard a dhoni while travelling beyond the reef. Recipes were taught in family kitchens, and the techniques of weaving, lacquer work and coir-rope making were learned by sitting beside skilled relatives.

These traditions helped Maldivian communities build boats, prepare food, navigate the ocean and create useful objects from locally available materials. They were not simply hobbies or artistic activities; they were essential parts of island life.

Today, however, many traditional skills face an uncertain future.

A generation growing up differently

Life in the Maldives has changed rapidly. Education, migration, technology and new employment opportunities have transformed the ambitions of younger generations.

Many young Maldivians move to Malé or other population centres for education and work. Others seek careers in tourism, technology, aviation, finance and government. Digital entertainment also occupies much of the time once spent learning directly from parents and grandparents.

These developments have created valuable opportunities, but they have also weakened the traditional system through which local knowledge was transferred.

When an experienced craftsperson retires without training an apprentice, an entire collection of knowledge can disappear. The loss may include not only the finished product but also the names of tools, the meaning of patterns, the reasons for choosing particular materials and the techniques developed through generations of experimentation.

Once that knowledge is lost, it can be extremely difficult to recover.

More than cultural decoration

Traditional knowledge is sometimes treated as something to display during festivals or cultural celebrations. In reality, it represents a living record of how Maldivians adapted to life in a widely dispersed island nation.

Traditional boatbuilding reflects an understanding of the ocean, wind, balance and locally available materials. Fishing knowledge includes awareness of currents, seasons, reefs, weather and the behaviour of marine species.

Food-preservation techniques were developed when refrigeration and regular transportation were unavailable. Weaving and coir work transformed coconut palms into ropes, mats and household materials. Local architecture responded naturally to heat, rain, ventilation and limited island resources.

These practices hold cultural value, but they may also contain practical ideas relevant to sustainability, climate adaptation and modern product development.

Protecting them is therefore not only about preserving the past. It is also about retaining knowledge that may help shape the future.

Turning digital technology into an ally

Technology is often blamed for separating younger people from tradition, but it can also become one of the strongest tools for cultural preservation.

A craftsperson’s techniques can be recorded through high-quality video. Elders can explain traditional words, stories and methods through audio interviews. Historical photographs and handwritten records can be digitised before they deteriorate.

Short videos shared through social media can introduce traditional skills to audiences who may never have encountered them. Online lessons can connect experienced artisans on the islands with students living elsewhere. Digital archives can organise information by island, atoll, craft and historical period.

A national digital platform could document:

Traditional crafts and production methods

Dhivehi and island-dialect terminology

Boatbuilding and navigation knowledge

Fishing practices and seasonal knowledge

Local recipes and food-preservation methods

Oral histories, legends, songs and poetry

Traditional games, ceremonies and performances

Information about tools, materials and patterns

However, documentation alone is not enough. A video can preserve the appearance of a skill, but practical knowledge survives only when people continue to perform, teach and improve it.

Creating value for traditional skills

One reason younger people may not pursue traditional work is the belief that it cannot provide a stable income.

Preservation programmes must therefore connect heritage with real economic opportunities. Skilled artisans should be able to sell authentic products to resorts, visitors, local customers and international buyers. Schools and cultural organisations could employ craftspeople as instructors, while tourism businesses could support workshops and demonstrations led by local communities.

A certification system could help distinguish genuine Maldivian-made products from imported souvenirs. Each certified item could include the artisan’s name, island of origin, materials used and the story behind the design.

A QR code attached to the product could take customers to a short video showing how it was made. This would combine physical craftsmanship with digital storytelling while giving proper recognition to the creator.

Traditional knowledge should not be commercially used without the consent and participation of the communities that preserve it. Artisans must receive fair payment, attribution and control over how their work is presented.

Bringing heritage into education

Schools can play an important role by making local heritage part of everyday learning.

Students could interview elders, record island histories, learn traditional vocabulary and participate in practical workshops. A boatbuilder could explain geometry through the shape of a dhoni. A fisherman could teach students about marine ecosystems and seasonal change. A craftsperson could demonstrate how local materials are prepared and used.

These activities would help students understand that traditional knowledge is not separate from science, design, engineering or environmental education. It contains elements of all of them.

Inter-island competitions, exhibitions and digital storytelling projects could make heritage more engaging. Young people could create documentaries, podcasts, photographs and interactive maps based on the traditions of their own islands.

A responsibility shared by everyone

Protecting traditional Maldivian skills cannot be left to artisans and elders alone.

Government institutions can support documentation, apprenticeships and cultural centres. Island councils can identify local knowledge holders and create community programmes. Schools can connect students with practitioners. Resorts can purchase authentic products and support nearby communities. Media organisations can tell the stories behind the skills.

Technology companies can help create digital archives, marketplaces and educational platforms. Families also have a responsibility to record their own histories and encourage younger members to learn from older generations.

Most importantly, traditional knowledge holders must remain at the centre of every preservation effort. They are not simply subjects to be photographed or interviewed. They are teachers, experts and guardians of living knowledge.

Keeping the knowledge alive

Tradition does not need to remain frozen in the past. Maldivian crafts, food, music and design can evolve while retaining their identity.

Young designers can reinterpret traditional patterns. Chefs can introduce local recipes to new audiences. Boatbuilders can combine inherited knowledge with modern engineering. Digital creators can transform oral histories into films, animations and interactive experiences.

The objective should not be to prevent change. It should be to ensure that change does not erase the knowledge, language and identity that came before it.

The Maldives is entering an increasingly digital future, but technology and tradition do not have to compete. Used thoughtfully, digital tools can help older generations transfer their knowledge and allow younger Maldivians to rediscover, practise and reimagine their heritage.

Every traditional skill carries a story of adaptation, creativity and survival. Protecting those skills means ensuring that future generations inherit more than photographs of what once existed—they inherit the knowledge and confidence to keep it alive.

Across the Maldives, generations of knowledge have been passed from elders to children—not through textbooks or online courses, but through observation, practice and storytelling.
