Male’ City Council has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dutch Docklands International over the floating city project in the island nation.<\/p>\n
The Maldives Floating City, is a floating community island that will be constructed in a lagoon not far off from Maldives capital Male’ City; accessible via a speedboat transfer. The city will be developed using the latest floating technology from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
According to the state, the floating city will comprise of 5,000 housing units that will be tethered to the lagoon floor, linked together to enforce a safer and comfortable environment.<\/p>\n
The MoU was signed by the Mayor of Male’ City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Chief Executive Officer of Dutch Docklands Mr. Paul H.T.M van de Camp.<\/p>\n
Speaking about the agreement, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu remarked, “finding adequate housing is one of the biggest challenges for the Maldives and is a problem that requires a quick solution.”<\/p>\n
Dr. Muizzu expressed his joy on collaborating with Dutch Docklands regarding the project aimed to providing solution for the housing issue.<\/p>\n
“It gives us great joy that the Male’ City Council is willing to support us in this pioneering project for the Maldives and the world. Through this project, we are not only addressing urgent housing issues, but also demonstrating an adaptation approach to rising sea levels due to climate change,” van de Camp said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Dutch Docklands signed a contract with Bison Maldives to commence construction of the first home of the floating city. The home units will be completed after Ramadan.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the innovative city project has already become a recipient of international recognition when recently, it was announced that the Maldives Floating City was shortlisted as a finalist in the MIPIM Award; which is dubbed the “Oscar’s for Global Development” under the “Best Future Mega Project” category.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
