According to the most recent publicized statistics from Maldives Customs Service, the revenue generated to the authority in January 2022 increased by 30%.
The Maldives Customs Service reported that it had generated a revenue total of MVR312 million in the review month.
In addition to this, the authority collected a total of MVR1.2 million in royalties.
The total imported goods value for the review period stood at MVR4.2 billion with the inclusion of fuel, and without the inclusion of the commodity, the import value stood at MVR3.4 billion. Additionally, both import conditions showed an increment of 49% in January 2022.
On the other hand, exports from the Maldives increased by 44%, with a total of MVR471 million worth of goods exported.
Meanwhile, the major import categories to the Maldives included machinery and mechanical appliances, food items (excluding pork, alcohol, and tobacco), and fuel (marine gas oil, petrol, and aviation gas).
Statistics confirm that the Maldives imported MVR841 million worth in machinery and mechanical appliances during the review month and MVR815 million worth in food items and MVR722 million in fuel.
China is the biggest importer to the Maldives with 20% of all imported goods originating from the Asian destination while Oman is the second biggest importer to the island nation with 14% of all imported goods originating from the country.
Other major importers to the island nation included India and UAE with each covering 12% of the imports to the Maldives and Singapore covering 11% of the imports.
The island nation is heavily reliant on the export of fish, seafood, and related items and is thus, the major export commodity as well.
In January 2022, Maldives exported MVR157 million worth of frozen skipjack tuna or stripe-bellied bonito, MVR33 million worth of prepared or preserved skipjack tuna, and MVR29 million worth of frozen yellowfin tuna.
The main export destinations of the Maldives include Thailand, with 54% goods exported, UK with 10% of goods exported, 7% to Mauritius, 6% to Germany, and 3% to India.
Moreover, there had been a total of 123 vessel arrivals and 142 departures recorded during January 2022 whereas in the same month last year 126 arrivals and 144 departures were recorded.
