The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology has highlighted prevalence of cybercrime as a universal threat, adding that the Maldives too, is grappling with the issue.
The Minister Ali Ihusan made the statement in his speech at the Global Security Forum 2024, held in Qatar.
In his speech, the minister stressed how cybercrime was jeopardizing the privacy and financial security of the Maldivian citizens, and the integrity of businesses and government institutions. He noted that cybercrime has stretched from identity theft to online scams, with its impact far-reaching and often devastating.
“… in a nation reliant on technology for communication, commerce, and currently in governance, the disruption caused by cyberattacks can have profound consequences,” he said, adding how it was undermining trust in online platforms and stifles the potential for digital innovation and economic growth.
Despite the constant battle against cybercrime and digital-age criminal activities, the minister said Maldives is not defenseless.
“Through education, awareness, and robust cybersecurity measures, we continue to fortify our defenses against cyber threats and mitigate their impact,” he added.
