The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Ms. Aminath Shauna affirmed the state’s initiative of placing at least 1,000 solar units in local residences before the end of 2022.
In association with local utility provider Fenaka Corporation, the state-monitored initiative will attempt to install solar energy harnessing panels for household use.
According to the minister, the state policy is heavily leaning towards renewable energy resources instead of conventional fuel-powered energy production. The state’s policy for pro-renewable energy aims to cut down the dependency on fuel.
Meanwhile, the initiative has commenced with physical works already carried out in some of the local islands. Moreover, the minister has echoed the state’s vision of achieving 26% of power production via renewable means before the end of 2023.
“Around 10% of the national productivity is spent on purchasing fuel for the production of energy, which translates roughly to USD400 million annually,” the minister commented.
Furthermore, the minister addressed prospect of slicing down utility bills in residences through the renewable energy initiative.
