Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has partnered with Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Renewable Energy Maldives to establish a renewable energy water production system.
The initiative’s partner, Hitachi Zosen, is a major Japanese industrial and engineering corporation that produces power plants, industrial plants and machinery, precision machinery, and construction machinery among other products.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing, held on Wednesday last week, 15th February, was graced by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori.
MWSC Managing Director Hassan Shah signed on the MoU on behalf of the state-owned enterprise while Hitachi Zosen Corporation’s Managing Director Miyagi Taiyo signed on behalf of the heavy machinery developer and Renewable Energy Maldives’ Chairman Dr. Ibrahim Nashid signed on behalf of the private enterprise.
Under the agreement, Hitachi Zosen will assist MWSC in developing a water manufacturing power plantation powered by renewable energy. The plant will be developed in Gulhifalhu, Male’ Atoll. The RO plant will have the capacity of producing 500 cubic meters of water daily.
Project particulars include installation of a 500 kilowatt Solar PV system and a 1,450-kilowatt-per-hour battery energy storage system.
“This renewable energy-based clean drinking water product will be funded by the Japanese government, Global Environment Center Foundation, Hitachi Zosen and Renewable Energy Maldives,” MWSC said.
MWSC also highlighted the importance of investing in renewable energy initiatives to achieve the “Carbon Net-Zero Emissions” target announced by the Maldives government.
