On Friday, August 11, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih officiated the ceremony held to land the new submarine cable, that will see the Maldives connecting to the international network grid.
The Ocean Connect Maldives-India Asia Express (OCM-IAX) initiative involves connecting the Maldives to one of the largest submarine cable network grids in the world. The project is carried out by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio.
Under OCM-IAX initiative, the submarine cable landed in Hulhumale’ which will connect the entire internet grid of the Maldives to the global network. The project comes under the Ministry of Economic Development’s purview in its bid to facilitate affordable internet access, transform the Maldives into a key communication hub in the South Asia region, and open the country’s economy to both the west and the east.
