The latest statistical updates from Ministry of Tourism as of 26th August confirm a total tourist arrival of 732,896 so far in 2021.
Moreover, the total tourist arrivals to the island nation from 1st up to 25th August has reached 120,529 indicating a growth of 1,754.3% in comparison with the same period of 2020 and the first ever positive growth when compared with the same period of 2019, at 0.2%.
The total tourist arrivals during the corresponding period in 2020 stood at 6,500; tourism industry sluggishly picked up movement after the border reopening in July of the previous year, yet never recovered fully.
Meanwhile, the daily average of tourist arrivals to the island nation has been recorded at 4,821 while the average duration of stay is currently at 9.7 days.
Russia maintains its position as the top source market to Maldives with a total arrival of 157,876 so far while India follows closely behind with a total arrival of 146,205 so far. Germany comes in at third spot with a total arrival of 42,078 so far.
Other major source markets to Maldives include USA with a total arrival of 29,589 so far and Ukraine with 26,920 arrivals on a year-to-date basis.
The island nation’s tourism industry is holistically recovering after the heavy impact in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. The bounce back is already reflected from the tourist arrivals which has exceeded far beyond the annual total arrival in 2020 which stood at just 555,494.
