The relative pushback on upgrade works of Koodoo Fisheries Complex has resulted in Maldives Parliament proposing a summoning of Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan for questioning.
It was confirmed that the parliament will be summoning the minister due to the delay in upgrading the storage capacity for MIFCO operated in the island.
Earlier, it was reported that several fishing vessels have faced issues in selling their catch to Koodoo due to insufficient storage capacity. Owing to lack of storage capacity, Koodoo announced it will be purchasing 5 tons of fish from each vessel; further putting the vessels in financial detriment.
Meanwhile, this has resulted in fishermen from southern atolls – mainly from central south atolls – to incite a strike against MIFCO over fish purchase limits.
The parliament is interested in inquiring about the delays on the construction of a new cold storage facility in Koodoo and the lack of policies to introduce an instant canning mechanism in the fish processing island.
