Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) confirms it will announce the final recipients of the second phase of the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya social housing schemes before the end of the presidential term.
Over 40,000 people applied for the social housing schemes’ second phase which included 21,247 applications for Gedhoruveriya, which grants housing units in Greater Male’ region, and 19,347 applications for Binveriya; seeking land plots.
However, with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s presidency winding up on November 17, the government earlier did not provide details about the decision for the second phase recipients.
The Minister of State of MNPHI Akram Kamaluddin on Sunday, October 30, clarified public speculation when he confirmed the second phase recipients list will be processed completely before President Solih’s term concluded.
He also assured the list will be announced before the presidential term wraps up.
Eligibility criteria for the social housing schemes were changed for the second round. With this change, applicants seeking housing units were required to have lived in Male’ region for 15 years, while applicants seeking land plots were required to have lived in Male’ region for 20 years or more.
While government is currently issuing registry for eligible applicants of the first round, Akram said the recipients will receive their registry documents for the 4,000 flats currently being developed in Hulhumale’ 2.
Earlier, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said he will not cancel the applications of the second phase of the social housing schemes.
