Maldives secures the title of World’s Leading Destination for the third consecutive year at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2022.
Announced at the Grand Final Gala event held on Friday, 11th November, at Al Bustan Palace, Oman, Maldives was crowned World’s Leading Destination title along with multiple other accolades. Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed and Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom accepted the awards on behalf of the island nation.
Maldives beat out 18 other destinations for the title, which included Dubai, Portugal, Indonesia and Greece among them.
Apart from the most prestigious title win at WTA 2022, Maldives also won World’s Leading Tourist Board award. This marks the first year Maldives has won this title. MMPRC competed and won against 28 other prominent tourism boards including Incredible India, Tourism Australia and Visit England among others.

Moreover, MMPRC front man Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed, speaking at the ceremony thanked the Maldives government for its guidance, and industry partners for their continued support. He expressed gratitude to the industry stakeholders for working with each other, and promoting Maldives tourism as a whole.

Maldives first secured the World’s Leading Destination title in 2020, amidst one of the worst global pandemics in recent history. A year later, Maldives observed resurgence of tourist arrivals and improved tourism activities, managing the win for a second consecutive year in 2021.
