State Trading Organization (STO) has reportedly started importing lemon to combat the rising prices of the item in the Maldivian market.
The state-owned enterprise stepped up with lemon imports to ensure the local consumer base receives the commodity at affordable prices.

As such, STO has reduced market rates on lemons to MVR45 per kilogram while it has been further reported that lemon will be sold on a per person per kilogram basis from outlets.
Meanwhile, consumers will be able to purchase three kilograms of lemon per person on a daily basis from STO AgriCenter.
STO had devised a fixed rate on the volume and price of lemon to ensure purchasing power for consumers on an equivalent manner.
Due to the scarcity of imports in lemon and a subsequent decline in the availability of foreign lemon produce in the local market, prices on the commodity sprinted up between MVR120 to MVR150 per kilogram in recent weeks.
