President Muizzu Reaffirms Maldives’ Commitment to Multilateralism on International Day of Diplomacy for Peace

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to multilateralism, calling for strengthened international cooperation to tackle the mounting global challenges threatening peace and sustainability—particularly those facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In a message marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, President Muizzu underscored the urgency of collective action in an era marked by geopolitical tensions, rising inequality, and a rapidly worsening climate crisis. He stressed that global cooperation is no longer optional—it is essential.

“Multilateralism is not just a diplomatic ideal; it is a lifeline, especially for vulnerable nations like ours,” said the President. Speaking from the Maldives’ perspective, he drew attention to the severe environmental and economic threats confronting SIDS and noted that multilateral platforms are vital avenues through which these states can amplify their voices, protect sovereignty, and lead the charge on climate diplomacy.

Highlighting the Maldives’ active role in global diplomacy despite its small size, President Muizzu recalled the nation’s historic 1989 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution on the “Protection and Security of Small States.” The resolution marked a pivotal moment, formally recognising the unique vulnerabilities of smaller nations within the global community.

The President also used the occasion to advocate for reform of international institutions, calling for a global order where justice is not reserved for the powerful and where equity forms the cornerstone of international relations.

“Peace must be more than the absence of war—it must be the presence of dialogue, shared purpose, and cooperation,” he affirmed.

Earlier in the day, President Muizzu also acknowledged the occasion on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, reinforcing the Maldives’ continued support for peaceful diplomacy and global solidarity.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed annually on April 24 to promote peaceful conflict resolution and uphold the principles of international law through cooperative global engagement.
