Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has reiterated the government’s strong commitment to expanding commercial port infrastructure throughout the Maldives, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s development agenda.
Speaking at the official agreement signing ceremony with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) for the expansion of the Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Port, Minister Saeed emphasised that the technical groundwork is already underway to upgrade the port facilities as pledged by the President.
He noted that discussions have been held with multiple stakeholders to explore ways to maximise the port’s commercial potential, and highlighted that MPL is actively working towards establishing a nationwide logistics network in accordance with government policy.

Alongside the Kulhudhuffushi project, the Minister outlined a series of ongoing and upcoming developments, including:
-
A signed agreement for the development of a commercial port in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll
-
Active discussions to redevelop the port in Maamigili, Alif Dhaalu Atoll
-
Further plans to upgrade ports in Laamu and Seenu Atolls
“God willing, the development of Kulhudhuffushi Port will move ahead rapidly. Once the remaining agreements are finalised, implementation will begin in earnest,” said Minister Saeed.
The Kulhudhuffushi City Commercial Harbour is being developed as a dedicated logistics hub that will serve Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, and Noonu Atolls. The project is being rolled out in phases and aims to:
-
Expand port capacity
-
Modernise cargo handling systems
-
Improve storage facilities for both general cargo and perishables like fruits and vegetables
The government highlighted that awarding the project to MPL is a critical milestone in creating a scheduled cargo handling network spanning from the northern to the southern regions of the country. This initiative is expected to:
-
Enhance supply chain efficiency
-
Reduce importation costs
-
Lower retail prices for consumers
-
Unlock new economic opportunities for the islands
Officials said the phased development approach not only reflects the government’s infrastructure strategy but also its broader commitment to decentralising economic growth and building a more sustainable national economy.
