President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a dedicated seaplane platform will be established in N. Velidhoo, with operations expected to commence by January next year. The announcement came during his official visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of the inhabited islands in South Miladhunmadulu Atoll.
In his address to the residents of Velidhoo, President Muizzu highlighted that while a domestic airport is being planned for Vihafaru, specific arrangements are also underway to ensure seaplane connectivity to Velidhoo. He further revealed that sea ambulance services will also begin operating from January, with vessels to be stationed on the island to enhance emergency response.
The President underscored several key infrastructure projects launched during his visit to Velidhoo — the most populous island in the atoll. These include the commencement of construction for a new hospital, a Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre, and a boatyard land reclamation project. Additionally, a separate groundbreaking ceremony was held for the island’s new police station.
Responding to a petition signed by 600 residents regarding issues with the island’s harbour, President Muizzu assured that their concerns would be reviewed with the relevant technical experts. He added that the harbour project would be implemented as soon as feasible, with the possibility of inclusion in next year’s budget if not immediately executable.
Looking ahead, the President announced further developmental plans for 2026, including housing projects and the expansion of educational facilities with new classrooms and school resources. He also confirmed that an agreement would be signed in September for the construction of a futsal stadium and a multi-sports facility, further enriching the island’s recreational infrastructure.
President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to citizen-centric development, ensuring that progress aligns with the immediate needs and aspirations of local communities.
