The Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, has arrived in the Maldives today on a state visit at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. This visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone, as it is Prime Minister Modi’s first official trip to the Maldives during his third term in office, and coincides with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence and 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Upon his arrival at Velana International Airport (VIA), Prime Minister Modi and his accompanying delegation were warmly received by President Dr Muizzu and senior government officials. A formal state welcome ceremony is scheduled to take place later today, in honour of the visiting leader.
During the visit, official bilateral talks will be held between President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi, focusing on enhancing cooperation across key sectors including infrastructure, climate resilience, health, education, defence, and regional security. The leaders are also expected to exchange several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements that aim to strengthen the existing frameworks of collaboration and mutual benefit.
Following the talks, both leaders will deliver joint press statements to share the outcomes of their discussions and highlight the shared commitment to regional peace, prosperity, and strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit is seen as a symbolic and strategic affirmation of the Maldives–India partnership, reaffirming India’s continued support under its “Neighbourhood First” policy. It also reflects the mutual aspiration to further fortify the long-standing bonds of friendship, economic collaboration, and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The state visit is expected to usher in a new era of Maldives–India relations, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a forward-looking regional vision.
