Maldives government has signed an agreement towards enhancement of Hanimaadhoo International Airport. As the agreement the international airport in the upper-north atoll will undergo heavy redevelopment efforts, to transition the venue for more contemporary standards.

On Sunday, 25th September 2022, JMC Projects (India) Pvt Ltd, the contract winner, signed the agreement with Maldives government, for one of the most expensive projects outside of Greater Male’ region till date.

The project total is reported at a staggering MVR2.1 billion.

The project will be funded through India EXIM Bank’s line of credit, which was signed earlier in 2019.

Major project particulars include development of a new 2,460 meters runway, and expanding the airport’s terminal to accommodate 1.3 million travelers in annual terms. Incorporating designs that symbolize the Maldivian nature, the airport development project will build additional facilities necessary for seamless aviation operations.

JMC is expected to complete the entire project under two years.

Post completion, the airport expects easy accommodation of larger commercial aircraft without parking scarcity. The new runway will be designed to provide ample room for planes like Airbus A320s or their Boeing 737 counterparts.

Apart from expansion of the airport’s facilities and runway, the upgrade will serve towards expansion of its aviation operations. Hanimaadhoo International Airport expects to connect with South Asian destinations, Southeast Asia and East African destinations following the project completion.
