The first Maldivian ‘Internet Governance Forum’ has concluded successfully.
The two-day forum was held on 16th and 17th June 2023, and was held in a total of 13 different sessions.
The event saw participation of various organizations, telecom service providers, academic institutions, technological and legal firms, local councils, youth, and several corporate and private businesses. The attendees had chimed in their opinions and perspectives on improving internet governance in the Maldives.
The forum was officiated by the Chief Judicial Administrator Al-Ustada Aishath Rizna. In her opening speech, Rizna highlighted the importance of reducing disparity in internet usage. She also urged participation of all the stakeholders in policy and decision making, which she believes is crucial for the comprehensive implementation and enforcement of laws related to the usage of technology.
While noting that technology has been integrated into the judicial system, Rizna highlighted that it is important to infuse technology in the implementation of policies, legal sector, and other government agencies as well.
The Chief Judicial Administrator also said that internet services should be available to everyone at affordable prices.
Several important points regarding technology and innovation were discussed at the forum. This include the possibility to introduce an innovative internet service provider in the Maldives owing to the growing demand, increase the productivity of technological products, and improve the investments made to develop technological and internet infrastructure.
Major corporations and associations which included Dhiraagu, Ooredoo Maldives, Javaabu Private Limited, Association for Democracy in the Maldives, Blind and Visually Impaired Association, Women in Fuvahmulah, Women in Tech Maldives, NCIT, Communication Authority of Maldives and several others provided information in the sessions.
