The Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has assured there were no obstacles to import general goods to the Maldives.

The minister said via X that the international countries with consistent trade ties with the Maldives, prioritizes their business transactions to the country. He further said the export policies and supply of perishables and foods from international destinations, is subject to regular revisions.

“President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu prioritized establishing food security for Maldivians since the beginning of his campaign until official assumption of office. God willing, we will succeed in the efforts with a sustainable and comprehensive solution,” he said.

Minister Saeed’s statements have come hot on the heels of Indian government’s decision to stop exports of onion temporarily.

Several Indian newspapers have already reported that the government chose cessation of onion imports to counter inflation, expected to rise for the House of the People (Lok Sabha) elections of the Indian parliament in 2024.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Trade of India said that the consignments for which payments have already been paid for, or ready to be shipped or shipped, and consignments registered on the system will be processed, with expected deliveries before January 5, 2024.

Indian media further notes that while exports of onion have been stopped by the government, it would still permit the commodity if requested by any foreign state that is a regular importer from India.
