State Electric Company (STELCO) has awarded certificates to its employees for completing National Certificate III in Water Supply System Operation and Maintenance, and National Certificate III in Sewerage System Operation and Maintenance courses. STELCO executed the courses in collaboration with the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT). A total of 89 participants received Certificate of Completion, for completing their respective programs. From the total, 66 employees completed National Certificate III in Water Supply System Operation and Maintenance course, and the remaining 23 employees completed National Certificate III in Sewerage System Operation and Maintenance. Total tourist arrivals to the Maldives has exceeded 780,000 as of 24th May 2023, reports the Ministry of Tourism. According to the ministry, tourist arrivals by the review date reached an annual total of 782,889. This is a 15.6% increment from the same period last year, during which arrivals stood at 677,034. Arrivals from the 01st to 24th observed a 5.7% decline, and registered a total of 94,604 arrivals in May 2023, whereas for the same period last year, arrivals stood at 100,230. Saudi Arabia has announced a total of 350 fully funded scholarships to Maldivian students, granting them the chance to pursue higher academic opportunities in Saudi universities. The Embassy of Saudi Arabia in the Maldives announced the scholarships will cover the complete cost of education. The scholarships will be available for use at any Saudi Arabian university. Interested students can apply for the scholarships online, while the fields of study covered under the scholarships include business management, media, computer science, law, agriculture, economics, politics, engineering, Islamic studies, and Arabic language. Tree Top Hospital has requested permission from the Ministry of Health to launch kidney transplant services. The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Adil Moosa said that the institution intends to introduce previously unavailable medical services in the country. He also said that the hospital already requested permission for kidney transplant services from the ministry, and will initiate operations once they receive approval. Bank of Maldives (BML) on Monday, 22nd May announced the introduction of Self-Service Banking ATM centers in two Noonu Atoll islands. As part of the bank’s strategy to expand banking services across the country to support local communities, BML introduced the ATM centers in Maafaru and Miladhoo, Noonu Atoll. The centers located in both islands will support individuals and businesses to withdraw, deposit, and transfer money on a 24/7 basis. The Ministry of Economic Development has introduced initiatives to offer grants of USD6,500 to 200 small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Maldives. Under the Maldives: Enhancing Employability and Resilience of Youth (MEERY) project, funded by the World Bank, the grants for women-led businesses and grants for tailoring businesses programs have been launched.
