The State Electric Company (STELCO) on Sunday, has cautioned the public on fraudulent calls from scammers pretending to represent the utility provider.

The scammers have been making frequent calls to unsuspecting customers to provide false information, STELCO cautioned.

“It has come to our attention that some of our valued customers have been receiving fraudulent calls from individuals pretending to represent State Electric Company Limited (STELCO). These callers are providing false information and may be attending to deceive you,” Hussain Fahmy, STELCO’s Managing Director said in a post on X.

He further said that STELCO will never ask for personal or financial information over the phone, and urged the customers not to share any personal information. Fahmy advised customers to immediately end such calls.

“Always verify the authenticity of any communication by contacting STELCO directly through our official channels,” Fahmy added.

Scams, in various forms, and in several terms in the pretext of notable and well-known state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have become rampant across the Maldives more recently with the rise of digital and technological innovation and integration.

The state has been making extra efforts to curtail such activities.
