In a heartfelt address marking Dhivehi Language Day, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the central role of the Dhivehi language in shaping the Maldivian national identity, cultural heritage, and unity.
Highlighting the profound significance of language in defining a nation, President Muizzu described Dhivehi as a symbol of sovereignty and pride, noting that its preservation and promotion are essential to safeguarding the Maldives’ independence and cultural legacy.
“We are blessed with a unique language and script that defines who we are. It is not just a means of communication, but a powerful representation of our history, customs, and national consciousness,” the President said.
He stressed that Dhivehi encapsulates the soul of the Maldivian people, reflecting centuries of tradition, belief systems, and rich cultural expressions. “For thousands of years, our language has been a thread that weaves together the identity of our people,” he added.
Calling for collective responsibility, President Muizzu urged families, educators, and communities to play a proactive role in nurturing an appreciation for Dhivehi among the younger generation. He highlighted the importance of cultivating new literary voices and supporting emerging talent in Dhivehi literature and the arts.
“The development and service of the Dhivehi language is a government priority,” he stated. “But this mission is not the government’s alone. Every Maldivian has a role to play in passing on the richness of our language to future generations.”
President Muizzu also underscored the need to ensure that Dhivehi continues to thrive in a modern context. He advocated for innovative approaches to teaching the language, literature, and poetry, so they resonate with younger audiences while retaining their depth and authenticity.
In a message shared on social media, the President described Dhivehi as the backbone of Maldivian identity, expressing hope that the language would continue to evolve in step with modern realities—remaining dynamic and adaptable, yet deeply rooted in its cultural essence.
“As we move forward, may our language continue to inspire pride, connect generations, and stand as a testament to our enduring national spirit,” the President concluded.
