OZEN LIFE MAADHOO Earns Green Globe Gold Certification for Pioneering Sustainability and Luxury in the Maldives

In a major milestone for sustainable tourism in the Indian Ocean, OZEN LIFE MAADHOO has been awarded the prestigious Gold Green Globe Certification, recognizing over five years of unwavering commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable luxury hospitality.

Situated in the pristine waters of South Malé Atoll, OZEN LIFE MAADHOO is renowned for its refined blend of contemporary elegance and Maldivian charm. The resort’s Gold certification underscores its ongoing efforts to harmonize opulence with ecological responsibility—positioning it among the region’s most environmentally conscious luxury destinations.

A Deep Commitment to Ocean Conservation

At the heart of OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s sustainability efforts lies its dedication to marine preservation. With in-house marine biologists leading the charge, the resort has launched an ambitious coral restoration and marine conservation project, regenerating a 300-meter stretch of its house reef. Through the installation of 80 coral spider frames, more than 2,000 coral fragments are being nurtured back to life.

Partnerships with prominent marine NGOs such as Manta Trust, Olive Ridley Project, Parley, and Miyaru NGO further enhance the resort’s environmental impact, focusing on species identification, reef monitoring, and ecosystem restoration. Guests are invited to attend interactive marine conservation talks—part of the resort’s broader mission to inspire environmental awareness among travelers.

    Immersive Eco Experiences

One of OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s standout offerings is Minus Six Meters (M6m), its signature underwater restaurant. Beyond gourmet dining, M6m provides guests with an awe-inspiring view of vibrant marine life, creating a powerful emotional connection to the underwater world and reinforcing the importance of its protection.

Renewable Energy and Smart Resource Use

In a bid to drastically reduce carbon emissions, OZEN LIFE MAADHOO has developed one of the largest floating solar panel systems in the Maldives. The expansive setup comprises 12 floating platforms with 720 panels and 1,095 rooftop panels, collectively covering about 30% of the resort’s energy demand. Complementing this are initiatives such as the use of a sewage treatment plant (STP) for irrigating gardens, aerators on taps, and water-saving filters in staff accommodations—all aimed at maximizing water efficiency.

Leading the Way in Waste Reduction

The resort’s Zero Waste to Landfill policy has drastically minimized its environmental footprint. An automatic organic waste composter transforms 2.5 to 3 tons of kitchen waste into 1.5 tons of nutrient-rich fertilizer weekly. Other systems—such as in-vessel shredders for garden waste, bottle and tin compactors, and incinerators—support the safe, responsible disposal of various types of waste. The result is a closed-loop waste management ecosystem that enriches the resort’s gardens while safeguarding the surrounding environment.

An in-house water bottling plant and recycling of 75% of island waste further solidify OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s position as a sustainability leader in the Maldives.

Sustainable Farming with a Fresh Twist

At the southern tip of Maadhoo Island lies a thriving hydroponic garden—a testament to innovation in sustainable dining. Producing up to 70% of the resort’s lettuce supply and a variety of herbs and vegetables, this soilless cultivation system drastically reduces water consumption compared to traditional farming methods, using just 50 liters per kilogram of produce.

    Leadership and Vision

Commenting on the achievement, Malin Elisabeth Alleyne, General Manager of OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, stated:

“At OZEN LIFE MAADHOO, sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations, from reef restoration to waste reduction. We believe these initiatives not only protect our beautiful marine environment but also inspire our guests and team members to be part of a greener future.”

    A Benchmark for Sustainable Luxury

OZEN LIFE MAADHOO’s latest accolade affirms its role as a trailblazer in sustainable travel. With its Gold Green Globe Certification, the resort continues to redefine the luxury hospitality experience—one that respects nature, empowers communities, and inspires mindful exploration.
