The Maldivian government has accelerated efforts to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation with China’s Sichuan Province, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the nation’s agricultural sector.
On Sunday, officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare held high-level discussions with a visiting delegation from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The meeting aimed to assess progress under the agreement and chart a path for deeper collaboration.
The MoU, originally signed in 2024 during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s State visit to China, outlines a comprehensive framework for agricultural development in the Maldives. It was signed jointly by the Maldivian government, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Key areas of cooperation include agricultural innovation, technical expertise, capacity building, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. The Ministry highlighted that the agreement is a significant step toward modernizing the sector and ensuring food security.
As part of the collaboration, the Sichuan Provincial Department has already donated agricultural machinery and test kits valued at USD 15,575 to the Maldives—support intended to boost productivity and innovation among local farmers.
The meeting served as a platform to evaluate current initiatives and identify further opportunities for mutual benefit. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the MoU and expressed optimism about deepening agricultural ties in the months ahead.
