President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended formal congratulations to Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz on his election as Chancellor of Germany, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to its long-standing relationship with Berlin and expressing hope for expanded cooperation in the years ahead.

In his message, President Muizzu underscored the historic friendship and close diplomatic ties between the two nations. “The Maldives values our close and friendly relations and looks forward to deepening bilateral cooperation and advancing shared global priorities during your tenure,” he stated, pointing to a future of enhanced collaboration under Merz’s leadership.

Chancellor Merz, head of Germany’s conservative bloc, secured his position after a decisive second round of voting in the Bundestag. Despite an initial setback in forming an alliance with the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), Merz ultimately garnered 325 votes—exceeding the required 316—in Germany’s 630-member parliament. His earlier bid fell short by six votes, marking a rare and historic challenge in German post-war political history and highlighting the complexities of coalition governance in a fragmented political environment.

President Muizzu’s congratulatory message not only celebrates Merz’s electoral victory but also reflects the Maldives’ broader commitment to working closely with Germany on global platforms. The President’s remarks signal a willingness to strengthen collaboration on international challenges, from climate change to sustainable development, where shared interests converge.

The Maldives and Germany have maintained strong diplomatic relations over the years, and this recent exchange underscores both nations’ mutual desire to deepen ties and foster cooperative progress on global issues.
