The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, is currently undertaking an official visit to the State of Kuwait at the invitation of Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya. Upon arrival, Dr. Khaleel was warmly received by his Kuwaiti counterpart.
During the visit, Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel is scheduled to hold formal talks with Minister Al-Yahya to reaffirm the longstanding and close brotherly relations between the Maldives and Kuwait—ties that are rooted in mutual respect and a shared Islamic heritage. The discussions will also focus on identifying new areas of collaboration to enhance the bilateral partnership.
In addition to diplomatic engagements, Dr. Khaleel will meet with several high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Minister for Investment, and Minister of Finance of Kuwait. These meetings aim to explore opportunities to strengthen economic cooperation through increased trade and investment between the two nations.
Kuwait has long been a valuable development partner for the Maldives, offering substantial support over the years. Notable contributions include assistance through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, which helped finance the expansion of Velana International Airport. More recently, in 2024, Kuwait provided a loan facility to support the Small Island Hospital Development Project.
This official visit underscores the Maldives’ firm commitment to deepening its relationship with Kuwait and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel is accompanied by Joint Secretary Khadeeja Najeeha and Political Director Fathimath Nasha Ismail.
