Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Sunday, June 15, 2025 declared that August 30th of each year will be commemorated as the National Engineers’ Day.

The announcement was made through a Directive issued by the President’s Office on Sunday.

As per the directive, the chosen date marks the anniversary of the inauguration of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge or the Sinamale’ Bridge, which remains the largest-ever infrastructure project executed and successfully completed in the Maldivian history.

The directive further mentions that the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure will be responsible with organizing and overseeing all activities to commemorate the National Engineers’ Day.

The 1.4-kilometer bridge opened on August 30, 2018 during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.

The USD 200 million project was primarily funded by the Chinese government; with a combination of USD 116 million grant and a USD 72 million loan. The Maldives government contributed the remaining USD 12 million for the project.

This infrastructure development initiative was overseen by President Muizzu who had been the Minister of Housing at the time.
