A New Era for Maldivian Aviation
The launch of the new terminal is more than just an operational upgrade it is a strategic investment in the Maldives’ long-term growth as a global tourism and trade hub. Designed to handle 7.5 million passengers annually, the modern facility is expected to significantly alleviate congestion at the existing terminal and cater to the growing influx of international visitors.
“This terminal is a game-changer. It will enhance our ability to deliver a world-class travel experience while unlocking major economic opportunities for the country,” said Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Managing Director of MACL.
Economic Impact and Regional Connectivity
The aviation sector is a critical pillar of the Maldivian economy, directly tied to tourism, which accounts for over 28% of GDP and 60% of foreign exchange earnings. The expansion of VIA through the new terminal is expected to boost air connectivity, attract more airlines, and increase passenger throughput directly contributing to job creation, foreign investment, and national income.
Moreover, enhanced operational capacity will allow for more efficient cargo handling, reducing logistics costs and improving trade volumes. This is particularly crucial as the Maldives continues to diversify its economy through exports of fisheries and other goods.

Passenger Experience and Technological Advancements
The new terminal boasts world-class design, cutting-edge passenger processing systems, expanded check-in counters, smart baggage handling, and upgraded lounges. Sustainability is also a core focus, with energy-efficient systems integrated throughout the building.
From an international perspective, this development positions VIA competitively among regional airports, enhancing the Maldives’ appeal not only as a tourist destination but also as a preferred transit point in the Indian Ocean.
Strategic Timing
The choice to open the terminal on July 26, a symbolic date in the nation’s calendar, reflects the government’s broader vision of aligning infrastructure progress with national pride. The opening will be a centerpiece of the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations, with key dignitaries and global partners expected to attend.
