President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated MCGH Opticals today at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), a dedicated opticianry service established under the Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) as part of the government’s broader healthcare expansion initiative.
Following the inauguration, President Muizzu toured the facility and personally handed over prescription glasses to the first three customers to benefit from the newly launched service.
MCGH Opticals was established in response to the President’s announcement on May 31, which introduced a set of measures to improve public access to high-quality eyewear in a convenient and cost-effective manner. A key element of the initiative includes increasing the Aasandha insurance allocation for prescription glasses to MVR 2,000, allowing more individuals to access essential vision care.
Within just two months, the new facility has become operational, offering a range of services including eye prescription assessments, diagnosis of common eye conditions, and the dispensing of prescription glasses.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of Malé City Group of Hospitals, shared plans for further expansion. He announced that similar optical services would be extended to Hulhumalé and five regional hospitals across the Maldives by August, ensuring greater nationwide access to affordable vision care.
The launch of MCGH Opticals marks another key milestone in the Muizzu administration’s commitment to strengthening public health services and improving the quality of life for all Maldivians.
