    Government completes 2025 with a MVR 3.48 bn deficit

    The most recent updates from the Ministry of Finance confirms the current government concluded 2025 with a deficit of MVR 3.48 billion.

    As per the latest statistics from the ministry, the government spent MVR 43.12 billion last year out of the approved MVR 49.2 billion state budget. As for earnings, while projections put the annual income at MVR 39.8 billion, government earned MVR 39.6 billion by the year-end.

    Revenue Breakdown:

    • Tax Revenues: MVR 29.2 billion
    • Non-tax Revenues: MVR 10.04 billion
    • Grants: MVR 415.2 million

    Looking at the total revenues of the state last year, tax revenues increased from MVR 26.4 billion in 2024 to MVR 29.2 billion last year. As for non-tax revenues, total went from MVR 8.1 billion to MVR 10.04 billion.

    Grants however, saw a decline from MVR 676.2 million in 2024 to MVR 415.2 million in 2025.

    Expenditure Breakdown:

    • Recurrent Expenditure: MVR 36.3 billion
    • Capital Expenditure: MVR 6.8 billion

    While recurrent expenditure saw an increment from MVR 34.9 billion in 2024 to MVR 36.3 billion last year, capital expenditure saw a significant drop in 2025 from MVR 13.3 billion in 2024.
