The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Ali Azwar as the new Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO). His appointment caps a near three-decade journey through the company’s ranks.

    A Career Built Inside STELCO

Azwar joined STELCO as a trainee in 1997. Over the next 20 years, he climbed through a string of technical and administrative roles. He stepped into the Managing Director’s chair from his most recent position as Deputy Managing Director.

His earlier tenure as Chief Operating Officer also stands out. During that period, he worked to strengthen the company’s management framework. Furthermore, he helped shape policies that better fit the Maldives’ specific energy needs.

    Broad Boardroom Experience

Azwar brings deep boardroom experience to the role. He has previously served as an Executive Director on STELCO’s board. In addition, he held a Non-Executive Director seat at Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM).

His expertise spans energy policy, strategic leadership, operations, finance, and business development; a skill set that has positioned him as a steady hand in guiding the company through complex challenges.

Academic Credentials Rooted in Renewable Energy

Azwar holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington. His doctoral thesis tackled renewable energy in small island states, a subject directly relevant to the Maldives. He also earned a Master in Public Policy from the National University of Singapore. He completed his Bachelor’s (Honours) at the University of Sheffield.

His research and professional focus centre on renewable energy and policy development for island nations. Moreover, he has taken part in global seminars on renewable energy, disaster risk reduction, and communication. He has also completed corporate governance training.

    A Timely Appointment

Azwar’s elevation comes as the Maldives sharpens its push toward renewable energy and a leaner state-owned enterprise sector. His blend of technical depth, policy expertise, and institutional memory positions STELCO for the next phase of its development.
